Some are simple concoctions incorporating little more than flour, baking soda and buttermilk, while others boast the additions of various fruits and spices. This raisin-studded incarnation comes from a former SAVEUR staffer, who learned it the way such dishes should be\u2014from her grandmother.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"padding_vertical embed\">\n<section class=\"content\">\n<h3 class=\"heading | margin_centered bold\">What You Will Need<\/h3>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"padding_vertical\">\n<section class=\"content\">\n<div>\n<ul class=\"list | margin_centered element-ul\">\n<li>Large Mixing Bowl<\/li>\n<li>Pastry Cutter or Two Knives<\/li>\n<li>Wooden Spoon<\/li>\n<li>Cast-Iron Skillet<\/li>\n<li>Serrated Knife<\/li>\n<li>Cooling Rack<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"padding_vertical embed\">\n<section class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"element element-rawhtml center_align \">\n<div class=\"recipe simple\">\n<div class=\"yield\">Yield: makes one loaf<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ingredients\">Ingredients<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"ingredients\">\n<li class=\"ingredient\">4 cups flour<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">2 tbsp. sugar<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 tsp. salt<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 tsp. baking soda<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">4 tbsp. butter<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 cup raisins<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 egg, lightly beaten<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 1\u20442\u20132 cups buttermilk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"instructions\">Instructions<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"instructions multiple\">\n<li class=\"instruction\">Preheat oven to 425\u00b0. Sift together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda into a large mixing bowl.<\/li>\n<li class=\"instruction\">Using a pastry cutter or two knives, work butter into flour mixture until it resembles coarse meal, then stir in raisins.<\/li>\n<li class=\"instruction\">Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Add beaten egg and buttermilk to well and mix in with a wooden spoon until dough is too stiff to stir. Dust hands with a little flour, then gently knead dough in the bowl just long enough to form a rough ball. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and shape into a round loaf.<\/li>\n<li class=\"instruction\">Transfer dough to a large, lightly greased cast-iron skillet or a baking sheet. Using a serrated knife, score top of dough about 1\u20442&#8221; deep in an &#8220;X&#8221; shape. Transfer to oven and bake until bread is golden and bottom sounds hollow when tapped with a knife, about 40 minutes. Transfer bread to a rack to let cool briefly.
