[Less than 24 hours] Tick tock

It is now less than 24 hours before departure. Wow. It is finally happening.

Things starting feeling more real after I got my traditional summer Mohawk yesterday at noon. Tonight we will have a prayer and farewell meeting at the house, and then, tomorrow at sunrise, about 6:15 am, we will be on the road.  Right now I see wee, because, Mel Maresh and Don Taylor have committed to accompanying me on the first leg of the trip, all the way to Amarillo. Once we get there, we will make the mandatory visit to the 72oz stake house, and ride the longhorn, cadillac limo, which picks you up at the KOA campsite.  What a trip.

The huge list of packing items that I will take with me for a month is piling up in the guest bedroom, and this afternoon I am printing the current state of the itinerary.  Calls, will be made to Spot Tracker to register for the road side assistance, even though I pray it will not be necessary, and final tweaks to tracking device.  Also, still on the to do list is to install the throttle position sensor protection system.

Just ahead of the trip, 29.75% of targeted funds have been raised, thanks to so many generous contributors.  The contribution sites will remain open for the duration of the trip, and hopefully this number will reach 35%.

In the meantime, Houston’s Midtown Rocks blog has graciously published an nice report on this initiative.  More than anything I hope the the title does inspire others, with the idea that we all have the Power of One to bring about a better, and more just world.

Well, I suppose it depends on who you ask, but for our purposes, what makes Carlos Solis special, is that on Friday, June 15, he will embark on a month-long, 10,000 mile, solo motorcycle ride from Galveston Bay to Alaska in an effort to raise awareness (and funds) of modern-day slavery and human trafficking.

Solis conceived the idea of riding to end slavery approximately four years ago when he decided that the issue of human trafficking was too big [more … ]
