This last Sunday I was attending bible study at our church, The City of Refuge, in Houston. We have been studying the book of James, and on that day we were discussing chapter 4. One of the members of this group is a wonderful African-American man, who always has kind words, a warm smile, and a firm hand shake to share. As we went over verse 15, he shared with us how, while he was in the Vietnam War, he would always preface his plans with the phrase “God willing”. Sitting across the room from him, I was struck by how much I have forgotten to do the same while I prepare for this journey. While I am being driven to enter on this trip with a deep sense of faith, I know I have also fallen into the habit that all the planning and execution, as well as the achievement of the goals are in my hands. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
The truth is that, God willing, I will leave Houston on September 4th, and return two weeks later, having ridden more than 5,000 miles, but most importantly, having raised funds for the freedom of slaves, and having raised awareness about the world in which we live in today.
God Willing!
